1. Which soft skill (ONE) stands out as an opportunity at your store or work unit? (visit the blog to see all 15 soft skills)

The soft skill that stands out as an opportunity within our department is self-care. Self-care, as defined by the Soft Skills blog, is an activity that promotes physical and/or emotional wellness. Indicators of self-care include eating well, prioritizing time for yourself, and leading by example in the workplace.

2. What tools and / or techniques are being used to put that soft skill opportunity to work for your team?

In an effort to improve on self-care, there are a multitude of techniques being implemented. On a general level, we have done our best to bring a positive attitude each day, and utilize our team for daily support.

3. As a team we plan to go a step further in promoting and implementing self-care. We are working to create a list of self-care activities to post in our department (and the breakroom!) in an effort to make self-care a habit for everyone. We will also be holding a monthly healthy potluck to celebrate birthdays and/or our team in general. This type of recognition boosts morale and contributes to happiness and self-esteem (a part of self-care!).

4. Obstacles to the improvement of self-care within our department include lack of tools, and lack of motivation. Tools include lists of easy self-care activities, providing resources for those struggling with issues that detract from self-care, and motivational support from team members, family, and friends. To bolster motivation, our team needs to understand the advantages of self-care, and visualize the long-term benefits for not only themselves, but the team as a whole.

5. When self-care is made a priority, the impact on the individual contributes to the well-being of the team. When employees are well-rested, hydrated, and happy, this creates a positive work environment, and fosters creativity. The team works more cohesively, they are more productive, and attendance is improved. However, self-care does not just benefit an individual as an employee, but will help them grow on a more personal level. It helps to remind us that our needs are important, and while often we are putting our well-being behind that of others, we have to be healthy and happy in order to make others so.
